Croatia - Day 13 - 14

8

I know, I know life is about change.  Our tour was about to end and we tried to hold on to every minute.  Meaning we used up every ounce of energy to experience what was left the last two days.  We ended the tour dog-tired, but satisfied.

Ston

Just a quick stop here for a walk through the little village and admire "the wall".  The Great Wall of Croatia was built for the same reasons as the Great Wall of China.  Defense.  Climbing up the mountain behind the little village of Ston.

The shopkeepers and little coffee places, know time is limited for tourists.  It was apparent when we ordered coffee at a sweet little place.  The owner/waiter was at our table in seconds, had our thick Croatian coffee and sweets back in a flash.  And it was good!  He was quick with the wit and joking; wishing we could stay longer to have a fun conversation.

Dubrovnik

The Pearl of the Adriatic.  Dubrovnik shines in an already sparkly Adriatic Sea.  There is so much to see and experience in the Old Town I cannot imagine trying to take it in without an experienced local guide.  We had probably the best there--Roberto.  He must give thousands of tours of the city, but you would not know it.  He tells the tales of old and new with excitement and gusto.  When Roberto turns you loose for the rest of the day, you can easily re-visit the places he has pointed out along the way.

To top off our visit, we actually witnessed the filming of a future segment of the Game of Thrones (HBO series).  Which I think is pretty exciting (but, I know, some of you are rolling your eyes on that one).

Farewell Dinner

The tour ended up at a wonderful restaurant next to the Adriatic Sea on a warm evening in early October.  A short walk from our hotel in the Dubrovnik resort area of Lapad.

After dinner we joined up at the hotel plaza for drinks and a circle of chairs with each tour member.  Our guide, Tina, asked each one of in turn to describe their "wow" moment of the tour.  Remarkably, each person had a different moment.   To me it was hard to pin down to one, but what stood out was, "I finally experienced the little outdoor European cafe with a glass of wine, sitting in the middle of the oldest of old buildings and seeing where history was made.  History I only read in books before this tour."

Wow.
